What Being a Wedding Pet Chaperone Actually Means

When couples tell us they want their dog at their wedding, we completely understand.
Your dog is family. They have been part of your everyday life, your adventures, your quiet moments and your celebrations. So when one of the biggest days of your life arrives, of course you want them there.
But having your dog at your wedding is about much more than bringing them along for a few photographs.
A wedding is a completely different environment from your dog's normal routine. There are unfamiliar people, music, cameras, food, flowers, children, other animals, busy venues and a timeline that can change at any moment.
While everyone else knows what is happening next, your dog doesn't.
That's where a professional wedding pet chaperone comes in.
At What a Treat Weddings, our role is to make your dog's involvement in your wedding safe, enjoyable and as stress-free as possible — while seamlessly working within the timeline of your day.
We manage the timeline
A wedding pet chaperone isn't simply someone who holds your dog's lead.
We are responsible for knowing where your dog needs to be and when.
That might mean arriving in time for getting-ready photographs, preparing your dog for their walk down the aisle, coordinating family photographs, taking them for a break while you have your couple's portraits, or making sure they are safely settled before the reception gets underway.
We work closely with your wedding planner, photographer, venue and other suppliers so that your dog's involvement fits naturally into the day.
But there is one important rule:
The timeline never comes before your dog's wellbeing.
If your dog needs water, a toilet break, a quiet moment or some space from the crowd, we make it happen.
If the schedule changes, we adapt.
We advocate for your dog
This is one of the most important parts of our role.
Your dog can't tell you, “I'm overwhelmed,” or “I've had enough photographs now.”
They rely on us to recognise it.
Throughout the day, we watch their body language and behaviour for signs of stress, overstimulation, discomfort or fatigue.
Maybe they're becoming restless.
Maybe they're avoiding interaction.
Maybe they're panting, licking their lips, yawning or becoming unusually clingy.
These subtle changes can tell us that your dog needs a break before they become genuinely overwhelmed.
Sometimes advocating for your dog means stepping away from photographs.
Sometimes it means creating some space around them.
Sometimes it means changing the plan.
And occasionally, it means deciding that your dog has had enough and should go home.
That's not us being difficult. That's us doing our job.
We manage what happens around them
A wedding is full of things that can unexpectedly affect a dog.
An excited child wants to hug them.
A guest offers them food.
Another dog appears.
A gate is left open.
The music suddenly gets louder.
Someone drops a glass.
A waiter walks past carrying a tray of drinks.
These are small things that can become big problems when you're responsible for an animal in an unfamiliar environment.
A professional wedding pet chaperone is constantly assessing what is happening around the dog and anticipating potential risks before they become an issue.
We know when to say no
This is perhaps one of the most important responsibilities we have.
Your dog isn't a prop.
They're not a photo opportunity.
They're a member of your family.
So if something isn't safe, appropriate or comfortable for them, we're prepared to say no.
That might mean declining another photograph, preventing an interaction, moving them somewhere quieter or recommending that they leave earlier than planned.
Our responsibility is not to make every request happen at any cost.
Our responsibility is to make good decisions for the dog in front of us.
More than a dog sitter
A wedding pet chaperone is part caregiver, part handler, part coordinator and part advocate.
We take care of the details you shouldn't have to think about on your wedding day — transport, toilet breaks, water, feeding, medication where required, photographs, ceremony participation, settling and safe departure.
And because we're working alongside your wedding team, we're also helping ensure that having your dog there doesn't become another thing for you to manage.
You should be able to look across the room and see your dog happily enjoying the day, knowing that someone is watching over them.
Because your dog deserves to enjoy the wedding too
The goal isn't necessarily for your dog to be present for every minute of your wedding.
The goal is for them to be part of the moments that matter most.
Walking down the aisle.
Standing beside you for photographs.
Joining you for family portraits.
Having a special moment with you between photographs.
And then, when they've had enough, retreating somewhere quiet and comfortable.
Sometimes the best wedding pet chaperoning is almost invisible.
You get to enjoy your wedding.
Your guests get to enjoy the celebration.
And your dog gets to be part of it without being overwhelmed by it.
At What a Treat Weddings, we take the responsibility of caring for your four-legged guest seriously.
Because your dog isn't just attending your wedding.
They're family.
And they deserve to be treated that way.
